About this listen

The Cold Case Squad has a problem: Someone won’t stop taunting Detective Everett Larkin. He’s been able to apprehend some of the worst criminals to ever stalk the streets of New York City, thanks in great part to forensic artist and boyfriend, Ira Doyle, but after their last case, events have taken a turn for the worse. A body recovered from the Hudson River bears a message addressed to Larkin and another token from Victorian mourning culture. As nineteenth-century hair jewelry leads Larkin deeper into the growing tangle of interconnected crimes, it becomes evident that solving these mysteries will come at a profound cost. To be a good detective, Larkin will have to endure sleepless nights—lest the sender act on their threat against his partner—as well as put his relationship on the line when clues lead in the direction of Doyle’s past. What began as a game of cat and mouse has turned into a fight for love and life itself.

This series just keeps getting better, I am so invested in these characters. The writing and narration are both 5 * for me. Kale williams voice is so soothing and authentic to the story of Ira and Everett. 😊

Compelling series

I read this book first when it came out, but Kale Williams' performance adds another layer to this. He perfectly manages to portray Everett's voice without inflections, as well as Ira's gentle voice filled with emotion. I highly recommend this audio!

Hudson River Homicides, the fourth instalment in C.S. Poe’s Memento Mori series, opens, once again, with Detective Everett Larkin confronted with a dead body in a most unusual location.

Unlike the other murders Larkin has investigated lately, this one can’t be classified as a cold case; the ME estimates the woman has been dead for only around three weeks, and when Larkin is able to get a good look at her face he’s surprised to find he recognises her from one of those recent cases. Also, there’s an antique brooch pinned to her tongue, another item associated with Victorian mourning culture - and is further confirmation that his and Doyle’s last three cases haven’t been random events, but have all been part of a tangled web of blackmail, extortion, corruption, and murder in which all the perpetrators are connected by a twisted, symbiotic relationship to whoever is leading Larkin on this merry dance.

The plotline of Hudson River Homicides is clever, complex and utterly compelling, but you really need to have read or listened to the earlier books for it to make sense. The author’s love for and knowledge of New York City and its history shine through as Larkin and his partner (on and off the job) Ira Doyle slowly begin pulling together everything they know about crimes new and crimes past, and the bigger picture starts to emerge. And once again, it’s the beautifully drawn relationship between these two damaged but loving men that is the emotional heart of the book. There are some intensely emotional moments in this story that will tug at the heartstrings and/or make you want to throw things, but these are expertly balanced by lighter ones; in the quiet tenderness and affection of Larkin and Doyle’s personal interactions, Doyle’s flirtatiousness, Larkin’s world-weary snark, and the more overtly comedic exchanges with colleagues.

Kale Williams is on top form here, delivering an expertly differentiated and nuanced performance that perfectly captures the essence of the two leads and the depth of the emotional connection between them. Larkin suffered a TBI in his teens and as a result, his speech is often described as lacking inflection and expression, but Mr. Williams finds a good balance between a kind of monotonic delivery and using a more natural-sounding cadence for Larkin’s dialogue while also managing to convey that he feels things deeply, even though he can’t express his feelings in what we might consider a ‘normal’ way.  KW is the perfect Ira Doyle – that lush voice! – and does an amazing job of conveying the deep-seated pain that continues to haunt him in the later parts of the story.

Hudson River Murders is a terrific addition to this fabulous series and I recommend it wholeheartedly.

NYC has main character syndrome in the best way and it's absolutely well deserved.
Doyle and Larkin are once again embroiled in some murder mystery and mayhem.
The love these two have for each other is phenomenal and they also make sure to enjoy themselves as well.
We also get more of Doyles past which was horrific and helps us to understand his thought process.
I'm screaming into the void for the next installment which can't be written fast enough.
Kale Williams did an amazing job narrating and bringing these characters to life.

Great continuation of the series
