About this listen

Philosophy for busy people. Listen to a succinct account of the philosophy of Hume in just one hour.

Hume reduced philosophy to ruins, denying the existence of everything except our actual perceptions themselves. The world is nothing more than part of my consciousness. Yet we know the world remains, and we go on as before. What Hume expressed was the status of our knowledge about the world – a world in which neither religion nor science is certain.

This audiobook is an expert account of Hume’s life and philosophical ideas – entertainingly written and easy to listen to. Also included are selections from Hume’s work, suggested further reading, and chronologies that place Hume in the context of the broader scheme of philosophy.

‘Each of these little books is witty and dramatic and creates a sense of time, place, and character . . . I cannot think of a better way to introduce oneself and one's friends to Western civilization.’ Boston Globe

‘A godsend in this era of the short attention span.’ New York Times

To do Hume in a little over an hour was probably frustrating, what to leave out, put in, and still maintain reader interest.
Condense, but worth getting. Hume was remarkable both personally and professionally. I'm glad I added this to my library.

Interesting.

While Hume had some interesting ideas, his life wasn't as interesting or dramatic as many of the others in this series (although the invasion of France made me laugh)!

Not as interesting as some...

A good wee outline of a philosopher who made a profound difference to the world. The text is witty and informative. The salient points of the Hume's philosophy are covered as well as entertaining biographical episodes.

Written with more humour than other episodes in the series. This was an enjoyable book

Excellent narrator, written with humour. Gives insight to Hume's personal life, with a bit of comedic exaggeration perhaps.
Quite easy to listen, probably more enjoyable for those who've already familiarised themselves with Hume's work.

Hume as a person.
