About this listen

In Matheson's vampire classic I Am Legend, a plague has decimated the world and transformed the unfortunate survivors into bloodthirsty creatures of the night. Robert Neville is the last living man on Earth. Every other man, woman, and child has become a vampire hungry for Neville's blood. By day he is the hunter, stalking the sleeping undead through the abandoned ruins of civilization. By night he barricades himself in his home and prays for the dawn. How long can one man survive in a world of vampires?

This recording also includes a sampling of other horror stories by Richard Matheson, some comic, all scary: "Buried Talents", "The Near Departed", "Prey", "Witch War", "Dance of the Dead", "Dress of White Silk", "Mad House", "The Funeral", "From Shadowed Places", and "Person to Person".

Now I know why it was called “ I am legend “ really good story based in the 60s great insight into alcoholism and insanity yeah really glad I read that one star review that said it’s nothing like the movie

Thank god this would be a great movie

Much better than the movie

I am Legend was great, but I couldn't make it through the "other stories". They felt overly separate and the change in narration style and the caricatured voices was off putting

I am Legend was great, shame about the other bits

Big fan of Richard Mathesons work, very interesting to hear the story of I Am Legend after seeing the movie.

Very different to what I expected!

The main story is good, but if you think it's going to be exactly the same as the film you will be disappointed.
However the additional stories after it I found a little tedious

Main book good,

I have read I am Legend before. Knowing the story makes a second read (listen) much better.

Matheson's prose devotes a lot of time to describe the details around the action. Exactly what the character does. The layout of the scene. This makes for a vivid image of the story, something I enjoy.

The listener is given a close and intimate insight into loneliness and dread. Neville, our protagonist, is vividly described.

Robertson Dean's voice is great. A timeless American accent.

The short stories are not very good, original, or inventive. Yuri Rasovsky has been handed a hospital pass here! That said, they allow us to see how Matheson works on his craft.

I am Legend is great. Short stories not so much
