About this listen

Can anyone actually buy peace or happiness? Perplexed by the loss of job and fiancé, Timothy Ray makes a symbolic purchase of the sun for a dollar to try to right things in his slightly off course career trajectory. When he stumbles upon a brilliant, cascading sunrise and then a chance meeting with a statuesque blonde he feels his life is about to change for the better but his new girlfriend is a spy, working for a contracted data mining firm. Undaunted and unaware that Lou Ann is actually Kate, Timothy continues to encourage people via social media to experience how energy is shared between us and the cosmos. Kate and her employer fear Timothy’s hope will threaten the leadership’s status quo. The firm incrementally steps up its spy game and seems to have no remorse about putting Timothy at risk of ridicule and perhaps worse. But Timothy’s biggest threat may come from the very source of his inspiration, the sun itself. Will he be able to save all from a cosmic catastrophe?

The narration is very poor. The narrator reads this book in such a lacklustre way it makes it really hard to get into. She takes weird pauses midsentence, which is jarring. As the story unfolds, it seems to get more and more choppy, with different takes being spliced together in a very obvious way. Somewhere around chapter 10/11 I could hear a clock ticking. All of this works against this book and makes it really hard to care about, and sometimes even follow, what is happening.

The stories ok, I struggle to understand some of the characters motivations though. There also seems to be way too many characters for a book of this length, so the characters don't feel as though they have enough time dedicated to their development.

It seems like the narrator didn't want to be here

Like many others have said, it’s like the narrator is uninterested in narrating. Like begrudgingly reading a bedtime story for 15,000th time. Moreover, the narrator seems to ignore punctuation. Read in a Bored monotone as if the book is just one long run on sentence.
Don’t know about the story, I can’t listen to it.

Narrator sounds bored

I was unsure how I’d feel about this book going into it. At times I questioned whether I could enjoy the way the story was unfolding, but by large that’s to do with my own fondness for science and my little time for pseudoscience. The book did a wonderful job of making me suspend my own beliefs and investing my commitment into the story.

The character work is great and I really enjoyed their stories playing out as the book goes on. I’m glad I gave this one a listen because I loved it. The pacing was perfect, the story was well thought out and well explained.

Annie as the narrator was fantastic too. Very well spoken and engaging to the listener.

If you’re on the fence about this title, I’d definitely give it a go!

Thoroughly Enjoyed
