About this listen

Best-selling author Christopher Winn explores Britain's royal past, unearthing a rich legacy of castles and palaces, cathedrals and country retreats, battlefields and monuments where kings and queens lived and died.

In this exploration of royal British history, discover whose heart is buried near the Tower of London, which palace was built on top of a mulberry garden, the world's oldest and largest occupied castle, and the first building in Britain to have latrines.

From the Palace of Scone to the Palace of Westminster; from Pembroke Castle, the birthplace of Henry VII, to Pontefract Castle, where Richard II starved to death; and from banqueting halls to beheading sites, this gem of a book is guaranteed to inform and amuse in equal measure.

This is one very fascinating and interesting listen. Obviously, since the 2015 publishing date, Elizabeth II became the longest reigning monarch and celebrated a Platinum (70th) jubilee in 2022.

A fascinating collection of facts and insights into the lives, wealth and privilege of the monarchy. It is brimming with tales of debauchery, staggering opulence, and the entitled arrogance of those who held power. This sweeping account of historical struggles for control between monarchs, states and religious hierarchies reveals just how ruthless these systems could be. It leaves you questioning how much has truly changed today, beyond the absence of burnings and beheadings. We still witness immense concentrations of wealth and the enduring instinct to control those beneath it.

An enjoyable listen for any history buff

There were some interesting facts in the book but it jumped all over the place and I found that I was so confused that I switched off. It was just ok.

It was hard to digest so many facts thrown out one after the other without any analysis. Was rather like an exam revision! But the reader was great
