About this listen

A never-before-heard collection of archive recordings of the wit and wisdom of Linda Smith - a "national treasure" of Radio 4 and BBC TV. (Links are narrated by Hattie Hayridge.)

In this brilliant anthology Linda's fans can now hear original recordings of her live performances, never before heard by the public, compiled and edited by her partner of 23 years, Warren Lakin. These recordings were made for her own private use, and this is the definitive collection of Linda's work on audio.

It's a real shame, because I was so much looking forward to listening to this. I loved Linda Smith (I'm not Clive) but, as others have pointed out, it's very difficult to listen to because of the audio quality. I appreciate these weren't professionaly recorded, and form part of essentially a personal collection, but it is still worth alerting other potential listeners. Much of the material of course is still excellent, but it takes real dedication and concentration to listen to. I'm still glad to have it in my collection though.

Shame about the quality

Like many I adore the late Linda Smith. Sadly, these excerpts from her stand-up routines, recorded before her wider successes on BBC Radio 4, lack in both technical audio quality and confident performance. As the narrator explains, they were recorded using often basic equipment to help Linda refine her routines. It's nice to hear material that eventually made it to "Linda Smith's Brief History of Time-wasting", but I suspect this collection will generally disappoint those who came to love Linda's warmth and wit. I'm not overly prudish, but hearing Linda swear - I suspect in order to "fit in" with her peers in stand-up - just sounds so wrong, because she was cleverer and kinder than that. What would later be her strong satirical voice just sounds whiney in her earlier material. I'm happy to have this album as part of my audio collection, but I won't be returning to it very often. Instead I'll enjoy Linda's wonderful appearances on "Just a Minute" and other shows.

Not Linda at her best but good enough

It's been a while since I sat down and listened to the passion and fervour Linda Smith brought to her comedy, but I'm glad that I found this title as I can come back to her again and again.

The quality of the stand up recordings aren't exactly professional, but as they were for Linda's use rather than publication that makes perfect sense.

A great loss for British Comedy

OK, so it's live. But the recording is terrible. I'm so disappointed!

Lousy quality recording
