About this listen

Short-listed for the Gordon Burn Prize 2018

A masterful true crime account of the Golden State Killer - the elusive serial rapist turned murderer who terrorised California for over a decade - from Michelle McNamara, the gifted journalist who died tragically while investigating the case.

'You'll be silent forever, and I'll be gone in the dark.'

For more than 10 years, a mysterious and violent predator committed 50 sexual assaults in Northern California before moving south, where he perpetrated 10 sadistic murders. Then he disappeared, eluding capture by multiple police forces and some of the best detectives in the area.

Three decades later, Michelle McNamara, a true crime journalist who created the popular website True Crime Diary, was determined to find the violent psychopath she called the Golden State Killer. Michelle pored over police reports, interviewed victims, and embedded herself in the online communities that were as obsessed with the case as she was.

I'll Be Gone in the Dark - the masterpiece McNamara was writing at the time of her sudden death - offers an atmospheric snapshot of a moment in American history and a chilling account of a criminal mastermind and the wreckage he left behind. It is also a portrait of a woman's obsession and her unflagging pursuit of the truth.

Framed by an introduction by Gillian Flynn and an afterword by her husband, Patton Oswalt, the book was completed by Michelle's lead researcher and a close colleague. Utterly original and compelling, it is destined to become a true crime classic - and may at last unmask the Golden State Killer.

Fascinating book

Couldn’t stop listening, especially knowing the alleged GSK is finally in metal bracelets, hearing the clang of metal on metal, signalling his end.

Brilliant

I thoroughly enjoyed everything Michelle had written, however I found it very off-putting that the narrator felt the need to put on a "gruff" male voice for the male parts. Weird.

Devastating the author didn't get to finish.

Michelle McNamara did a tremendous job with this book. Non-fiction isn't a go-to genre for me (unless it's about animals/science/environment) but if all non-fiction serial killer books were written like this, I'd devour one after another.

Despite the recent arrest of the GSK, McNamara could imply maximum terror in very few words. Numerous times during this book I felt the hairs on my arms and neck stand on edge. She managed what few non-fiction books do (in my experience): she made sure the reader knew they were reading about real people. I feel McNamara gave enough detail about the crimes without becoming just a matter-of-fact book that focuses more on the glorification of the murders than the lives of those affected. I'll admit I love a good book that reels off stats and figures about serial killers but this gave me a very different perspective and constantly reminded me of the genuine terror felt by the victims, something that, admittedly, I do forget when reading about notorious serial killers.

On a nicer note, I thought Patton Oswald's afterword was very moving. It contrasted with the overall tone of the book, which basically centred around the destruction of people's (mostly, couples) lives, so Patton's lovely speech about his wife was a nice way to end a very tragic book.

One of my favourite True Crime books

This is a chilling story well told and researched. The prose is flowing and really interesting. The story is incredible and most of all it's true. The sense of sorrow for the victims palpable as is the longing to catch this vile, evil killer. One down that knocked off a star. An update. If you need one then search evil has a name. Its equally good.

Great story, well read and engaging.
