About this listen

TURN TO THE DARK SIDE (MAYBE)

In his last life, Liam lived as a moral, responsible person...but died deep in debt and betrayed by his wife. Reborn into the ruling family of a vast interstellar empire, Liam knows that life is divided between the downtrodden and the ones who do the stomping, so this time he's going to take what he wants and live for himself. But somehow, things refuse to work out that way. Despite doing his best to become a tyrant, Liam's decisions lead to nothing but peace and prosperity for the empire under his rule, and he just gets more and more popular!

I listened to this straight after listening to Reborn as a Space Mercenary, which was awful. I truly expected to hate this as well, but I was pleasantly surprised.

The ecchi artwork made me think this would be smutty adolescent garbage, but there's actually a really solid story being told here. The protagonist is emotionally wounded, without being broody, and surprise, surprise, is an actual character, not just an audience stand in.

There are some ecchi elements, but they play second fiddle to the sci-fantasy world building, and lite court politics. There isn't much action until near the end, but it's pretty cool when it happens. And the narrator is great. One thing Seven Seas are good at is hiring great voice actors.

This isn't great literature, but it is very entertaining. It's light enough to follow easily but with enough depth to chew on for those who are interested.

This is isekai done right. It's not just a power fantasy, there's a real story here, and I'm there for the duration.

Way better than I thought it would be

I love the accidently succeeding trope similar to Overlord or Ciaphas Cain.

The voice acting is also pretty good.

I hope this series continues.

Peak

Loved every minute of it. Uplifting story arc and progression. Rooting for our MC all the way. Elements of sci-fi, economy, battles and politics. A must listen.

Spectacular Sci-fi Isekai

Silly fun with unsettling undertones.
I found a whole bunch of these 7Seas series with the first episode free so I thought I'd try them out as a pallette cleanser as I'd been doing a lot of serious Sci Fi lately and it's surprisingly okay.

There's a split perspective so you get the perspective of the evil overlord and his benefactor/ antagonist the Guide.

It is a wish fulfillment power fantasy Iseki where a would be bad guy ends up doing inadvertent good mostly due to a failure of his own imagination and persistent good advice from his advisers.

I think a lot of credit goes to the narrator who gives Liams inner monolog a warmth not entirely in keeping with his thought and actions.

Also one persistent goal of the character is to start a harem but he seems persistently disinterested in men and women often on the most minor of reasons so there is a very low spice content that diminished as the book went on

Better than Expected
