About this listen

The twenty-fifth enthralling Hugh Corbett medieval mystery from Paul Doherty, perfect for fans of C. J. Sansom, E. M. Powell and Bernard Cornwell.
January 1313. As London is gripped by a freezing winter, Sir Hugh Corbett becomes embroiled in a ghoulish game of kings played out between the English and French courts.

Years earlier, Corbett prevented a gang of rifflers from breaking into the Royal Treasury, but the leading chieftain, Sarasin, escaped. Now Sarasin is caught killing a squire of Queen Isabella's and Corbett swiftly has the riffler tried and hanged from the signpost of The Twilight tavern.

The matter should have ended there but more mayhem ensues as, one by one, those who helped bring Sarasin to trial are gruesomely murdered. Behind all this is an individual calling himself the Immortal. He swears the most bloody vengeance against Corbett and all those who support the royal clerk, and, as danger dogs Corbett's every footstep, he must act quickly to prevent further bloodshed.

This is about 150 in the series of these books and yet there’s no sign of the author getting bored or chucking them out with no effort. Great plotting and scene setting.

as ever a great story (although after a while you can guess who the baddie might be) however, whilst this tail was wrapped up, it is part of a bigger story so I await the next book with baited breath!

a cliffhanger!

This is another great book from Paul Doherty, read once again by Richard Burnip. The time flies by when I'm listening to these books. They are so enjoyable, with great characters and brilliant stories. The way Paul Doherty weaves his fictional characters into real events with people who actually existed is masterful. These are surely a must for anyone who enjoys exceptionally well written historical mysteries, read by a great narrator.

another excellent tale from the Hugh Corbett portfolio. Paul Doherty not only writes a thoroughly good murder mystery, but brings medieval England to life with anecdotes and commentary.
So much so I have started to read some of the real history of these turbulent times.
