About this listen

Macmillan Audio presents In My Own Way, Alan Watts's acclaimed autobiography, published for the first time in audio.

In this audiobook, Alan Watts tracks his spiritual and philosophical evolution from a child of religious conservatives in rural England to a freewheeling spiritual teacher who challenged Westerners to defy convention and think for themselves. From early in this intellectual life, Watts shows himself to be a philosophical renegade and wide-ranging autodidact who came to Buddhism through the teachings of Christmas Humphreys and D. T. Suzuki.

Told in a nonlinear style, In My Own Way wonderfully combines Watts’ own brand of unconventional philosophy and often hilarious accounts of gurus, celebrities, psychedelic drug experiences, and wry observations of Western culture. A charming foreword written by Watts’ father sets the tone of this warm, funny, and beautifully written story of a compelling figure who encouraged seekers to “follow your own weird” — something he always did himself, as his remarkable account of his life shows.

Shocking narration. Laughable at times. Hats off to the listener who took the time to write a detailed review. So I had an idea what to expect but really. This audiobook should be referred to someone at the Alan Watts foundation to review. I doubt they'd be happy.

Nonetheless I am enjoying listening to the story, purely because I adore Alan.

I must echo the warnings on pronunciation

Was happily surprised that this was an autobiography and interesting at that. He had such wonderous mind from early on

As we all are we are a product of our experience so this biography proves. The last two chapters are so relevant to our own time it is magical to hear. But the last 15 minutes are the most important and can not be heard without all that is before. take the time and listen. I pray that all that read this review and more important this book that the rain fall softly in you field.

Worth the time

I just love Alan Watts. He was an English eccentric who challenged just about every conceivable corner of religion and this made him slightly unpopular! I think everyone should HAVE to listen him in secondary school.
The narration is good but strange pronunciation of "wummin"( woman).😂
The "story" paints a vivid picture of real bohemia in USA....how fabulous it was! Slightly disappointing that the book is so short. There's very little on his personal relationships and his family situation (s).
A fantastic man whose ideas may very well prove to be of monumental significance.🤩

Spot on Philosophy!
