Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The stuff you really need to know about how the economy works? It's pretty simple. Yes, even if you were bored to tears in economics class, or if you're cross-eyed from reading painfully convoluted-or straight-up misguided-financial commentary. In this particularly disorienting era, Kyla Scanlon is the Tim Harford of the disaffected and disillusioned Gen Z looking for answers.

This is the definitive, approachable guide to the key concepts and mechanics of economics and the most common myths and fallacies to steer clear of. Through Kyla's trademark blend of creative analogies, clever illustrations, refreshingly lucid language-and even quotes from poetry, literature, and philosophy-she answers questions such as:

- Is our national debt really a threat?
- What is a "mild" recession, exactly?
- What's really happening in the employment market, and how do we improve it for workers?

At a time when experts overcomplicate simple things loudly, choosing to generate smoke rather than clearing the air, In This Economy? shows that understanding the markets-and the systems they operate in-is easier than you think.

Whether you're worried about your mortgage rate, job security, bank account balance, or the health of the broader economy, this concise and witty guide will give you the confidence to make smarter financial decisions-no matter what the headlines say.

Critic reviews

Few people can communicate how the economy actually works better than Kyla Scanlon.
Kyla's singular style is approachable, witty, and endlessly informative, helping readers decipher everything from the labour force to housing to what Jay Powell's thinking.
Kyla is a master at explaining even the most complex and arcane subjects with verve, wit and creativity-whether it's the mechanics of the US debt ceiling, the 'vibecession' or the nuances of meme investing. We're lucky we have Kyla around to show us how it all works.

I love Kyla’s takes, especially from a macroeconomics perspective. She has a way of explaining complicated things simply to the layperson. Even as someone who has studied economics and worked in this field, I found her explanations refreshing and helped me to relearn these concepts in a way that is relatable to our everyday lives.

Economists can sometimes get too bogged down in the details and and numbers, we lose sight of the bigger picture. This is exactly what Kyla has done brilliantly. And I also love that Kyla’s take is so related to people, which is what economics and economists would benefit from focusing more on.

Thank you for writing this book Kyla! I’m a fan of your contents and your econ digests, keep on making them ;)

An excellent book

I’m surprised at the lack of press/publicity for this book. It deserves to be read by anyone interested in Economics, financial markets, US politics or current affairs. Scanlon blends insight on key economic concepts with moral philosophy. I don’t agree with author on everything but it was refreshing to listen to an Economics book that doesn’t deviate from ethical debates.

Very, very good

This is both a comprehensive explanation of the market and a modern empathetic look at how recent events have affected our markets and in turn our society. It explores each aspect of the economy in a clear and relatable way through the eyes of a Gen-Zer but isn't short on depth and history and at times genuinely thought-provoking and profound.

For those who want to "win" at the markets, with secret advice, this is probably not for you, But for those who want a sense of what economics does and how it influences our politics, society, and lives it's highly enjoyable.
