Moving house has become a way of life for 15-year-old Isobel Miller. Her father is an Army Major; her mother, a middle aged, pregnant, chain smoking alcoholic. I love this book, the idea and story! The narration could have been a little bit better, the mother sounded like an old man. I didn't even realize it was third person!

I totally enjoyed this book. It is full with new and imaginative ideas. The teenage characters are all struggling with their own inner demons. They were able to changed and developed in response to events.

In the relatively short length of the book the author manages to create a thoroughly complex world with deep characters, without sacrificing the story. Religion, science, and the supernatural are seamlessly blended together throughout the book. Normally I would shy away from this combination, however, the author has managed to balance them well weaving them together in a believable way. The resulting world is dark and the characters flawed, whilst they struggle against the coming darkness.

If you are looking for a light and cheerful story then this is not for you. There are no happy endings here, just struggle and survival wrapped in an excellent and well narrated story.
