About this listen

Warren Gatland's In the Line of Fire is the ultimate chronicle of this summer's remarkable Lions tour to New Zealand - home of the fearsome All Blacks, the double world champions - which culminated in an historic and nerve-shredding series draw.

The book is the Head Coach's wonderfully candid and vibrant record of the withering ferocity, the turbulent peaks and troughs, the triumphs and despairs, of one of sport's toughest challenges.

It gives rugby fans an unparalleled front-row seat with the squad and coaching team during every facet of preparing for and executing a successful tour on the opposite side of the planet, recounting intriguing details on everything from pre-tour planning and strategy, to on-tour experiences, analysis and decision-making.

It all adds up to a thrillingly definitive exposition and post-mortem of a mind-blowing six weeks in the cauldron which forged the mighty All Blacks.

Really interesting read and look behind the scenes at the lions tour, would recommend - just brace yourself when an Irish player or coach is saying anything - cringe worthy accents!

Good read, great insight... Dodgy accents!

Gats is an amazing coach, with some intresting stories but this has been ghost written really badly; the dates and times stuff is clunky and the narrative made confusing by switches in voice, an uncertain use of the past and present tense throughout and foreshadowing which removes any sense of tension from the narrative

Not great

Being a passionate Welsh supporter I was anticipating the telling of the tour in Gatts words. In his tenure of being Welsh coach he seemed to have moulded the family orientated feeling from his New Zealand roots into the similar foundation of the Welsh valleys. Although he was not the narrator, his driving passion for the game was tempered by his humanity towards the squad of players and it was if he was talking. I just felt a warmth towards his attitude and his self-deprecating description of being grumpy. A fantastic insight into the tour and of the man we Welsh supporters have taken to our hearts. Thank you Gatts. A great read.
