About this listen

Spring, 1909, and Lady Hardcastle, amateur sleuth and all-round eccentric, is enjoying a well-deserved rest. But a week after a trip to the cattle market, Spencer Caradine, a local farmer, turns up dead in the pub, face-down in his beef and mushroom pie. Once again, it is up to Lady Hardcastle and her maid, Florence, to solve the case.

Armed with wit and whimsy, not to mention Florence’s mean right hook, the pair set out to discover what really happened and why. Was it poison or just ill luck?

As they delve further into their investigation, they encounter a theft where nothing is stolen, a séance with a troubled ghost and an ever-increasing number of Spencer’s family and friends who might just have motive for murder. One thing’s for sure: Lady Hardcastle has a mystery on her hands.

Revised edition: Previously published as The Spirit Is Willing, this edition of In the Market for Murder includes editorial revisions.

Clever, funny, exciting, charming, gutsy, adventurous ripping yarns of two splendidly brave Edwardian ladies!
I love these books! If you crossed Sherlock & Watson with Blackadder, threw in a bit of Oscar Wilde, you'd get Lady Hardcastle & Florence Armstrong.
So rare you get protagonists who are so likeable, entertaining, believable and female to boot. Write faster Mr Kinsey, we need more! (I'm sure this will be on tv before long)
Elizabeth Knowelden's narration is also exemplary. It's quite possible to forget that only one person is speaking.
All round, these books are stonkingly good.

Up the women!

I found this much easier to listen to than the first in this series as quite a few of the characters were the same. still a fair few new names to remember which meant that I did have to concentrate while listening. On the whole, an entertaining plot that did draw me in. I look forward to the next in this series.

Better than the first

These books are so enjoyable - there is a good story line with characters who you can conjure up in your minds eye with the good description we are given. The thing which amuses me is the amount of Brandy, tea, cakes and pies which are consumed in abundance!

Brandy is the key
