Summary

Michael Morpurgo’s wonderful storytelling and Jim Broadbent’s compelling performance combine to tell this true story against the epic backdrop of World War Two. Francis Cammaerts, Jim Broadbent and Michael Morpurgo happen to be all part of the same family, so this production is a very special collaboration bringing family members' voices to life.

Francis and Pieter are brothers. As the shadow of one war lingers and the rumbles of another approach, the brothers argue. Francis is a fierce pacifist while Pieter signs up to fight. What happens next will change the course of Francis’ life forever...and throw him into the mouth of the wolf.

The story of a man who didn't want to fight in the war, but ended up leading resistance fighters in occupied France. sad and uplifting in almost equal measure. It's read really nicely by Jim Broadbent and written by Michael Morpurgo - two really talented people.

In the Mouth of the Wolf by Michael Morpurgo, narrated by Jim Broadbent.

This story which is based on a TRUE STORY as Michael (the author) is Francis's (the story's character) nephew and also Jim Broadbent (the narrator) is related to both Michael and Francis also.

So it's an amazing family collaboration, which personally, I think gives the fantastic story a more interesting, familiar, heartbreaking/wrenching, believable, mind whirling, lovable journey.

Jim Broadbent's heartfelt narrative will leave you laughing, gasping, sobbing, smiling, sobbing laughter & wishing you could just reach out & give Jim a hug.

Michael has out done himself again with his storytelling. Even though Francis has lived & told his family about his journey during WW2, Michael has created & brought to life this piece of his family's history.

Ps: I am in love with the way Michael has written his description of Nan/Nancy (Francis's wife) The way he has written Francis's first meeting with Nan is so beautiful & humourous, which is also mixed with heart wrenching emotions as his story of meeting Nan is mixed with a bit about Francis's brother Pietier.

I would totally recommend this story to anyone. Well worth the LISTEN, especially as I don't think it would be the same just reading it.

Jim's narrative really feels like Francis is in the room, with all the emotions of reliving his story to you.

Jim's emotive narrations makes Francis's conversation with you come alive, making you feel goosebumps and extremely grateful for his sacrifice.

Hopefully this review has made you want to have a listen without giving any spoilers away.
