In Moscow a serial killer is on the loose - taking his victims' hair as a souvenir, carefully removing the buttons from their clothes. For Militia Colonel Dimitri Danilov, a good cop with a bad personal life, catching this madman is a matter of pride. But then the killer brings the U.S. government into the case. The latest victim is an American embassy economist, the beautiful niece of a powerful U.S. senator, and a woman with kinky secrets of her own. Now Danilov must team up with elite FBI agent Bill Cowley. And for the two cops, finding the killer will suddenly become much more than a job.

This is the psychological thriller I've been waiting for. The two main characters go against the stereotype by being self reflective rather than emotionally wounded, and the politics of a Russian/American investigation add to the complexity of the plot. Although this is a murder story, the details of the crime are not dwelt on excel as evidence.

An Excellent Thriller

A good mix of likeable and unlikeable character weave in and out.

It had the potential of being overwhelming trying to keep track of them but the combination of the narrator’s skill and the author’s writing (with maybe a little helpful editing) kept the characters and body count in check.

Historically, it is an interesting snapshot of pre-Putin Russia and the story (published 1992) gives unintended insight of how the social decline and influence of powerful oligarchs began to emerge and take over from commonplace petty corruption creating an entrenched system of political asphyxiation and golden opulence which would have been the envy of the Tsars.

On a lighter and more optimistic note, the story highlights positive aspects of human nature which transcend personal political ambitions by featuring more than just one or two characters with unquestionable high quality. In their own sphere, they are seeking justice, fairness and kindness across many human boundaries. Be they between cops and robbers, political and professional rivals, or personal relationships and infidelities.

The results show that by crossing the barriers created through fear, suspicion and envy, good things can happen and it is through honest and open collaboration that great achievements can happen.

All very cleverly shown in this one book. Very clever. Top marks from me.

A metaphor for open and honest collaboration across boundaries.
