About this listen

"I held my line. I knew from the war, if not from shooting rabbits, that we were safe enough for the first moments. It is too impossible to hit a target like us from a helicopter that's rocking and rolling and trying to find its target. But maybe this guy had new equipment or maybe he was a brilliant shot or maybe he was just plain lucky. Bullet holes tore through the ute like a huge metal punch was suddenly and roughly slamming a simultaneous line of them from our rear to our front."

Ellie has struggled to put the war behind her and lead a normal life. Although what's normal about your parents having been murdered; trying to run a farm and go to school; and bringing up a young boy who's hiding terrible secrets about his past?

Critic reviews

"Marsden has the rare skill of making his audience feel that they are part of the story and vicariously another character. Ellie speaks directly to them and in their language." ( The Age)

With a different narrator and a somewhat slow paced story Co. Pared to the main tomorrow series I was finding it quite hard early on in the book but I decided to stick with it and it was worth it. Great ending to the book.

Pleasantly surprised

Overall its a good book and worth the credit and a listen. However, after listening to all the other books Suzi became Ellie, her voice was perfect for the plucky bush loving Cockie. Not only that but she was also the very distinctive voice of Homer, Lee, Fi, Gavin and the other characters. Mikaela’s voice lacked all that comfort of knowing who was talking. While she did a reasonable reading for me she lacked the Ellie factor. I just couldn't imagine her doing the things she was reading. She did sound like someone exhausted and tired of everything though, which Ellie is at this point so fair enough. That said I enjoyed the book and will listen to the last one but as my granny used to say, ‘if it ain't broke don't fix it’.

All change!

change of narrator

When we bought this we didn't realize it was by a different narrator. As we have been used to another narrator for all 7 books from the tomorrow series and the first one of the Elle Chronicles its kind of hard to get used to someone else now. Don't get us wrong, she isn't a bad narrator its just hard to have her come in so late. So it took a long time to get used to her in this book, she pronounces characters different, especially Gavin. It did make it harder to listen to the book.

As for the story itself, its good and enjoyable although no where near as good as the tomorrow series. Its this that makes us think should the author of ended it at the end of the tomorrow series? There can be too much of a good thing. Still a good story, interesting read and would still recommend. Just remember a new narrator which takes a lot of getting used too...

Not as good as the first, new narrator.
