About this listen

A small town murder hides a dark secret....

When online influencer Simone Baker asks Leland Munroe to defend her on a criminal charge, the small town lawyer is ready to say no. He’s not a criminal lawyer—despite what the people of Basking Rock seem to think. Social media and manslaughter are both far from his area of expertise. But with no other clients coming through his door, Leland takes the job to make ends meet.

At first, he figures the prosecution’s weak evidence should make for a simple defense. But Simone’s case isn’t as straightforward as it seems, and her testimony weaves a tale of missing young women, racism, and evidence tampering by local police.

Leland’s investigation soon reveals a criminal conspiracy lurking in the shadows of the small town. An innocent women may be tied up with a criminal organization he thought was gone from Basking Rock for good. And as the Jury’s verdict looms closer, it’s not just Simone’s freedom that hangs in the balance.

Leland’s own life is on the line as well....

Well this was an interesting story about how money influences the internet, the court case was interesting and I liked how the interwove covid restrictions into the plot.

In the first book I struggled with the narration until about half way through, this time it felt completely natural; although there was nearly a year between me listening to the two.

Really interesting story

This is a very enjoyable instalment in this series, much better than book 1 in my opinion but that's maybe because we know more about the protagonists back story. Squatter is a great addition though.

This was the second book by this author that I listened to, and I enjoyed it.
You can read the book as a standalone, but I suggest listening to or reading the series in order, since the characters develop over time.
Leland has left the big city behind and is still trying to get a foothold in his career when he’s asked to take on a defense case. The case involves an influencer whose competitor has been murdered. Leland isn’t particularly familiar with social media, but he desperately needs the money. He also has his private investigator, Terri, to rely on. The story delves into the world of influencers, and he does everything he can to protect his client from going to prison.
Additionally, the father-son relationship with Noah continues to develop in an authentic and believable way. The case—or rather, the investigation—and the question of which evidence should be presented and which shouldn’t is both thrilling and entertaining.
The story takes place during the COVID-19 pandemic, which is portrayed authentically; the author did a pretty good job with that. However, personally, I didn’t particularly enjoy being reminded of that time with all its restrictions, but that’s a matter of taste.

The audiobook was narrated by JJ Hosenfeld. I think his narration was good, but he didn’t always hit the right tone for the female private investigator. Overall, I found the audiobook entertaining.

I really enjoyed listening to this book, the first from Mr. Kirkland and I believe also that it was the first for the narrator J J Hosenfeld. He did a good job of bringing the story to life for me. This book gave me a look into how people make money using the internet to influence people. Simone has done very well at it as she relates to the audience how she deals with her illness and healthy lifestyle. I was surprised by who was actually guilty in this book and I'm hoping if there is another book it will allow us to have a further look into what happened. I'm sorry I can't remember the lawyers name but his helper Terri was great at being able to find information. I would enjoy listening to more of this author's books. I received a free code for this book from Audiobooks Unleashed to listen to on Audible. This review is my own honest opinion

Very interesting story line, suspenseful!
