About this listen

Sunday Times best-selling author Christopher Berry-Dee seeks to understand the motivation, the amoral urges and the merciless horror behind Dahmer's inhuman behaviour.

Christopher Berry-Dee is the man who talks to serial killers. A world-renowned investigative criminologist, he has gained the trust of murderers across the world, entered their high security prisons and discussed in detail their shocking crimes. Berry-Dee now delves into the mind of perhaps the most sadistic and psychopathic killer of all time.

Between 1978 and 1991, Jeffrey Dahmer murdered and dismembered 17 boys and men. But he is most notorious for what happened to his victims after their grisly deaths and the shocking depravity that led to Dahmer being dubbed the ‘Milwaukee Cannibal’.

Using his long experience and psychological expertise, Berry-Dee seeks to understand the motivation, the amoral urges and the merciless horror behind Dahmer's inhuman behaviour: what could make a man do this?

Having already known a fair bit about the serial killer jeffery dahmer this book didn’t give me much more information. That being said I did enjoy refreshing my memory of the crimes. Despite other reviews I actually enjoyed the way it was written and liked how opinionated it came across at times.

Nothing new really

It was interesting to see into the mind of a killer like that. I shudder to think about what he did, and also was appalled at times by the nature of his killings. But it wasn't half interesting... it was fully interesting.

Amazingly dark

The author spends a lot of time putting himself in the telling of this story as if it is anywhere as interesting as that of the subject (it is not). Irritating.

Can’t get past author’s high opinion of himself

I love the writing style of CBD however he does go off on tangents sometimes this is good other times I’m left wondering why
He goes off speaking about other killers in this book and whilst yes you can relate certain aspects to them this book is about Dahmer and should remain with that as the primary focus.
That being said there is a lot of detail that enlightens the reader to details and a side of this story that has yet been explored a nice perspective I thought.

Great listen with just enough detail.

For an established journalist/author this is a very poorly written book, full of irrelevant details (each chapter detailing each murder is repetitive and includes the date and time the next of kin was informed) and equally full of his own unqualified opinion. The book starts with the author criticising experts "talking at" it's audience, and then he proceeds to do the same thing himself. Non associated facts are included, for example the etymology/origin of month of July and April, a critique of religion that seemlessly morphs into a critique of the bible, as if that is the only religion. The author gushingly refers to another author (Masters) on this topic, leading me to the conclusion that I should have read that true expert book instead. The narration of the audible version is in British English, but cringingly in parts narrates some dialogue in a faux American English accent. The best thing about this book? it's short.

if you like being patronised, read this book.
