From the Collins Crime Club archive, the second Inspector French novel by Freeman Wills Crofts, once dubbed ‘The King of Detective Story Writers’.

THE RETURN OF INSPECTOR FRENCH

When young Maxwell Cheyne discovers that a series of mishaps are the result of unwelcome attention from a dangerous gang of criminals, he teams up with a young woman who is determined to help him outwit them. But when she disappears, he finally decides to go to Scotland Yard for help. Critic reviews

"A detective novel by Mr. Wills Crofts is always an event to those who know...Mr. Crofts is among the few muscular writers of detective fiction. He has never let me down." (Harold Nicolson, Daily Express)

I felt the story was slightly too convoluted and cliched. However, the character of Inspector French is enjoyable, although slow to appear this episode. Phil Fox does a great job of narration once again

Slightly complex story but great narration

not much of a mystery and plot rather contrived compared to previous author works....imo because French brought into plot at a late stage

weakest one so far

This is only my second Inspector French book, and it was okay. I’m working my way through the series, which I only discovered last week, in order. I was a bit disappointed to find so little Inspector French (about half as much as I would have liked) and I hope the next book has more.

More French please

It isn't the best detection classic. But it was an enjoyable listen, if a bit long winded in parts. The initial main character was a bit of an extremely gullible fool, believing what anyone told him - but it would have been a short story otherwise.

Enjoyable
