Hatsumode is a Japanese New Year's custom. 初詣とは、年の始まりに神社やお寺に行き、神や仏に感謝するとともに新年の誓いを立てる日本の風習です。
もともと日本には、家長が大晦日の夜から元日の朝にかけて氏神の社に籠もって祈願する「年籠もり」の習慣があり、それが初詣の由来といわれています。
今では東京の明治神宮には三が日で300万人以上が訪れますが、実は、初詣が一般化したのは意外と最近で、鉄道が発達した1900年代初期以降といわれています。
日頃は神社やお寺に行く習慣があまりない日本人の多くが神社やお寺に詰めかけるのは、初詣が宗教行事というより、一つのイベントとして定着しているため。
