 The costume play (cosplay) boom in Japan began in the latter half of the 1990s. 日本で現在のようなコスプレブームが起こったのは、1990年代後半のこと。
『美少女戦士セーラームーン』や『新世紀エヴァンゲリオン』などのアニメの大ヒットが、そのきっかけでした。
現在ではアニメやゲームのキャラクターだけでなく、メイドや忍者など、多彩なコスプレを楽しむ人も増えています。
日本でコスプレを楽しむのは圧倒的に女性が多く、コミケ会場にはメイク道具や衣装の入ったキャリーバッグを持った女性が大集合。さらに、彼女たちの姿を写真に撮ろうとするカメラ小僧も大勢集まります。
