In the 1990s and 2000s, "Idols you can meet" began to appear, mostly around Akihabara. 1990年頃までの日本では、テレビの歌番組や映画などで活躍するアイドルは、ファンにとっては手の届かない（面と向かって会うことができない）存在でした。
けれども、1990年代から2000年代にかけて、秋葉原を中心に「会えるアイドル」が登場します。
会えるアイドルとは、路上などでのライブ活動やイベントを通じ、観客との交流を重視しながら、ファンを増やしていくタイプのアイドルのこと。
ファンにとっては、アイドルが成長する過程を見守ることができるという楽しみもあるようです。
今や国民的アイドルといわれるAKB48も、もともとは「会えるアイドル」から始まりました。
半面、あまりにも身近すぎるゆえ、アイドルが熱狂的なファンから危害を加えられる事件も起きており、社会問題になっています。
