An estimated 500,000 people will cross the intersection each day in Shibuya. スクランブル交差点とは、交差点に入る車の流れを止め、歩行者がどの方向へも渡れるようにした交差点のこと。人の多い繁華街でよく見られます。
スクランブル交差点は、1940年代にアメリカやカナダで登場しました。日本では1969年に熊本県に設置されたのが最初です。
今では日本に300以上のスクランブル交差点があるといわれ、もっとも規模が大きく有名なのが、東京の渋谷駅前にある交差点です。
渋谷のスクランブル交差点では、1日に50万人が渡るといわれます。
クリスマスやハロウィンなどのイベントの日には、多くの人が自発的に渋谷のスクランブル交差点に集結。2016年の大晦日の夜には初めて歩行者天国となり、6万人以上が集まりました。©2017 KODANSHA　 English Language Learning
