In Japan, there are public baths that are open for anyone to use called sento. 日本には、銭湯と呼ばれる、誰でも利用できる公衆浴場があります。
各家庭が風呂を備えるようになっても、銭湯は、地域の人たちが裸のつきあいをする社交場のような役割を果たしてきました。
現在、町なかの小さな銭湯は少なくなりましたが、反対に増えているのが、大型のスーパー銭湯です。
1980年代に登場したといわれるスーパー銭湯は、ジャグジーなどさまざまな種類の浴槽やサウナがあるほか、エステやカラオケ、ゲーム、食事なども楽しめるレジャー型の銭湯です。そのため、町なかの銭湯に馴染みのない世代の人々も楽しめます。
