There are two main religions in Japan: Shintoism and Buddhism. Buddhist temples are called tera, and there are almost 80,000 in Japan. 日本では主に神道と仏教という2つの宗教が信仰されていますが、このうち仏教の施設が寺で、日本には8万近くの寺があります。
朝鮮半島から日本に仏教が伝えられたのは538年のこと。
当時、仏様を偶像化した仏像を祀るために建てられたのが、日本での寺の始まりだといわれています。
同時に寺は、キリスト教の修道院のように、悟りを目指す修行者たちが共同生活をする修行の場でもあります。
また日本では、多くの人が仏教の方式で葬式を行うため、境内に墓地のある寺も多くあります。
