There is a range of yakatabune from small boats with a capacity of 10 people, to larger luxurious ships that can carry up to 100 people.

平安時代の貴族たちが、池や川に舟を浮かべて、景色を眺めながら歌や音楽を楽しんでいたことは、日本ではよく知られています。
このような舟遊びは、江戸時代に江戸っ子の風流な遊びとして庶民の間でも大流行しました。
この時に活躍したのが、屋根と畳敷きを備えた遊覧船の屋形船です。屋形船は現在も形を変えて受け継がれ、現代の人々も屋形船で宴会や花見、花火見物などを楽しみます。
屋形船には定員10名ほどの小型の船から、定員100名の大型で豪華な船もあり、最新式の屋形船には、カラオケやエアコンなどが備えられています。
