Summary

 There was a kingdom known as Ryukyu that existed on the Nansei Islands, part of present day Okinawa Prefecture, for 450 years beginning from 1429. 現在の沖縄県がある南西諸島には、1429年から450年間にわたり、琉球と呼ばれる王国がありました。
琉球王国は貿易を通じて中国や朝鮮半島、東南アジア諸国と交流をもち、現在の日本の他の地域とは異なる文化を育みました。
その独自性は、グスクと呼ばれる城にも見られます。琉球王国のグスクは一般的な日本の城とは異なり、うねるように延びる城壁が特徴です。
沖縄には200以上のグスクが残るといわれますが、現在はすべて遺構。唯一、建物が復元された首里城だけが、当時の姿を今に伝えています。(※2019年11月に焼失、再建検討中）
このグスクをはじめ、墓陵や庭園、聖域など9つの資産が、今はなき琉球王国の文化を示すものとして、世界遺産に登録されています。©2017 KODANSHA　 English Language Learning
