Summary

 Itsukushima Shrine is located on Miyajima Island in Hiroshima Prefecture. 広島県の宮島にある嚴島神社は、海の上に建てられた、世界でも類を見ない水上の木造社殿です。
創建は593年ですが、現在の姿になったのは1168年頃。平安時代の武将である平清盛が、一族の繁栄を願って建てたものです。
以来、嚴島神社は800年以上にわたって昔のままの姿を保ち続け、1996年に世界文化遺産に登録されました。
静かな海に朱色（赤色）の社殿が映りこむ様子はとても美しく、その姿はフランスにある修道院の島「モン・サン・ミッシェル」と比べられることもあります。
嚴島神社の背後には御神体である「弥山」と呼ばれる山がそびえており、ロープウェイでのぼることができます。©2017 KODANSHA　 English Language Learning
