 Iwami Ginzan is a group of ruins in Shimane Prefecture where silver used to be mined in the 16th to 20th centuries. 島根県にある石見銀山は、16〜20世紀に銀の採掘が行われた銀山の遺跡群です。
戦国時代から江戸時代にかけて、日本の銀の産出量は世界の3分の1を占めたといわれ、そのほとんどが石見銀山で産出したものでした。
16〜17世紀の大航海時代、石見銀山の銀は、世界の政治や経済、文化交流に大きな影響を与えたのです。
そのような意味で、石見銀山は、日本の近代産業のルーツでもあります。
構成資産は、大きく分けて4つ。銀の採掘や精錬が行われた「鉱山跡」、麓の「鉱山町」、沿岸の「積み出し港と港町」、沿岸と銀山を結ぶ「街道」です。
