Summary

 The registered World Heritage Sites of Kinkakuji and Ginkakuji are temples of the Rinzai sect. Both temples were founded during the Muromachi period.

世界遺産に登録されている金閣寺と銀閣寺は、ともに室町時代に創建された臨済宗のお寺。
金閣寺は、室町幕府3代将軍の足利義満の山荘が、義満の死後に寺になりました。正式名称は鹿苑寺ですが、金箔を貼った舎利殿が金閣と呼ばれるため、金閣寺と呼ばれています。
一方の銀閣寺は、義満の孫で、室町幕府8代将軍義政の山荘が起原。義政の死後、慈照寺という名の寺となりました。金閣を模した黒漆の観音殿が銀閣と呼ばれ、銀閣寺の名で親しまれています。
金閣寺は、貴族的で華麗な北山文化を代表する建築。対する銀閣寺は、簡素な美意識に基づく東山文化を代表します。
