紀伊山地は昔から、神々が集まる神聖な地域とされてきました。
また、仏教においても重要な修行の場でした。
ここには奈良県、和歌山県、三重県にまたがる3つの霊場があります。
修験道の修行場である「吉野・大峯」と、真言密教の根本道場である「高野山」、さらに熊野信仰の聖地である「熊野三山」です。
世界遺産に登録されているのは、これら3つの霊場と、そこに至る参詣道。
この遺産の特徴は、自然崇拝にもとづく日本古来の神道と、中国から伝来した仏教の融合、そして寺社と自然が一体となった文化的景観です。
