 The Shirakami Mountain Range is spread across Aomori and Akita Prefectures and spans over 1,000 meters. 1000ｍ級の山々が連なる白神山地は、青森県と秋田県にまたがって広がります。
白神山地には、世界でもほとんど見られなくなったブナの原生林が、東アジア最大級の規模で残っています。
氷河の影響をほとんど受けなかった日本では、かつて、各地でブナ林が見られました。ところが、第二次世界大戦後の土地開発のため、多くが伐採されてしまいました。
そんな日本において、白神山地のブナ林は、約9000年前から生き抜いてきたといわれています。
観光用の道路や施設がほとんどない白神山地は、絶滅の恐れのあるイヌワシやクマゲラなど貴重な動物たちの住まいでもあります。そのため、人類が守り続けていくべき森林として、1993年に世界遺産に登録されました。©2017 KODANSHA　 English Language Learning
