Summary

 In the villages of Shirakawa-go in Gifu Prefecture and Gokayama in Toyama Prefecture, we can see the Edo period buildings called gassho-zukuri. 岐阜県の白川郷と富山県の五箇山には、江戸時代に造られた合掌造りと呼ばれる家屋が今も見られます。この日本の原風景が、1995年に世界文化遺産に登録されました。
合掌造り家屋は豪雪に対応するため屋根が急勾配で、屋内で養蚕をするために大きく造られています。
これらの集落では昔から、人々が「結」と呼ばれる相互扶助の精神で、合掌造り家屋を守ってきました。
けれども近代化や後継者不足で家屋の維持が難しくなり、かつては1850棟以上あった合掌造り家屋も、現在では白川郷で114棟、五箇山では29棟が残るのみです。
合掌造り家屋は少なくなりましたが、現在でも共同で屋根の葺き替えや防災訓練を行うなど、結の精神は生き続けています。©2017 KODANSHA　 English Language Learning
