 The Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution are a series of historic heavy industry sites that were pivotal in Japan's transition into a major industrial power. 「明治日本の産業革命遺産」は、日本を産業大国に導くきっかけとなった、重工業分野の産業遺産です。
幕末、開国を迫る西欧諸国の脅威を目の当たりにした日本は、九州・山口地方の藩が中心となり、国防のための近代化を進めました。
当時の人々が西洋を手本に、競って近代工業知識の吸収に努めた結果、大きく発展したのが、製鉄・製鋼、造船、石炭産業の分野でした。
そのため、日本は非西洋国家としては初めて、幕末から明治時代にかけてのわずか50年間ほどで、産業国家としての地位を確立しました。
