The area is made up of the Yanaka, Nezu, and Sendagi districts and lies between Bunkyo and Taito wards in Tokyo. 東京の文京区と台東区にまたがる谷中・根津・千駄木の一帯は、それぞれの地名の最初の文字をとって「谷根千」と呼ばれています。
第二次世界大戦の空襲を免れた谷根千には、木造住宅が多く残ります。
また、細い路地の中ほどに隠れるように雑貨屋があるなど、東京探訪の冒険心をくすぐる場所がたくさんあります。
なかでも谷中は、1980年代のバブル時代には開発の遅れた場所といわれていた半面、現在でも江戸時代の地図で歩けるほど、昔ながらの暮らしが息づいています。
猫の多い谷根千は「猫の街」とも呼ばれ、明治時代の文豪、夏目漱石の代表作『吾輩は猫である』も、千駄木にあった漱石の家で書かれました。©2017 KODANSHA　 English Language Learning
