About this listen

It's April 1948, and war hangs over Jaffa. One minute, seven-year-old Salim is dreaming of taking his first harvest from the family's orange tree; the next he is swept away into a life of exile and rage.

Seeking a new beginning in swinging '60s London, Salim falls in love with Jude. The only problem? Jude is Jewish.

Ishmael's Oranges follows the story of two families spanning the crossroad events of modern times and of the legacy of hatred their children inherit.

A really enjoyable book, sympathetically narrated. Interesting story, well written. I was interested to learn that the book is based on the author's personal circumstances, which lent authenticity to the events and emotions of the characters. Would read more of this author's work.

Excellent

Thought this book was very well written. Unbiased account of some of the historical war in Israel, and a controversial interracial relationship. For me, elements of this book were highly relatable, yet I also appreciated the insights. Well done.

Beautiful account of interracial love and war

Story telling was excellent and kept me interested from start to finish. If you don’t know anything about the background of the Middle Eastern conflicts this story tells it without being partisan and gives an alternative point of view which makes it even more relatable. Especially in view of the current situation in the Middle East it gives us a human point of view not a stereotypical view.

Storyline and narration excellent
