Could He Really Leave His Family? His Kids? In January 2016, Chris David was grieving the loss of two close friends, facing the end of a tumultuous marriage, and heading into a custody battle for his youngest son. He was also thinking about how to kill himself. Convinced it would fix his problems and end his pain, he was standing on the edge of a cliff of despair, somewhere he never thought he would be. But as Chris David explains, there was one major problem with that plan. “My wife may have wished me dead, but I didn’t want to leave my sons without a father. I couldn’t abandon them and let them feel the same way I did when I was a kid. My boys didn’t deserve that. No matter what happened and how horrible I felt at that moment, I couldn’t do that to them. I didn’t want to do that to them.” Realizing he had some work to do on himself before he could be the father he needed to be, Chris began a five-month journey zig-zagging across the southern US with his lovable sheepdog O’Malley by his side. Using his inner voice as a guide, Chris’s journey was marked along the way with “strangers” that would validate his choices and point him toward home.

In It Was Never Just About Me: The Journey That Saved My Life, Chris David lays bare the fractured family that raised him, his desire for love and validation, and the void inside him that could not be filled until he faced his challenges head-on. He details the peace he on his found on his journey and the strength he draws on every day to be the father he wants to be. A raw, inspirational memoir, It Was Never Just About Me: The Journey That Saved My Life is both honest and moving—and a pat on the back to anyone struggling to take control of their life.

I found it incredibly honest but once the author realised that being open about his circumstances his life began to change and more and more positive interactions followed his honesty. It saddens me that the author has been let down by the people who should have been keeping him safe and caring for him no doubt because of their own trauma they didn't know how to behave any other way but thankfully Chris decided to break the cycle of that behaviour pattern and live life on his terms whilst still being a good Father and friend. I also loved so many coincidences of him being at the right place at the right time to meet people pivotal to his creating his new life. I hope the 'Universe' is kind to this man because he deserves it.

the strength of character to keep going after being let down by so many people, sadly mostly women

I've never cried so many tears of empathy and happiness during a book apart from when it was self development books that my mind, body and soul were reacting to due to my own personal situation.

Chris, life hasn't been kind to you over the years. I know through Social Media that things are much better for you and it honestly makes my heart happy.

Keep being you and fighting the good fight. What an inspirational person you are and what an amazing father figure to your boys. Hold your head high. The fact it was your amazing voice telling the story was a lovely bonus.

Wishing nothing but good things for you and your boys in the future from the bottom of my heart x

I liked that it open, honest & raw. Sad that it was mostly women that negatively impacted his life.
Dislike some words were unclear but overall a wonderful listen.

I brought this book because I wanted to find out a bit about who Christopher David was and what made him up as a person. The listen was short with a brief but part in depth looks at his life from childhood to the present day. It's a very difficult ride in parts where some surprising revelations were revealed. Things that happened to him I wouldn't necessarily relate to the person you see today. You will also get to see who he is which is interesting. He's lived a life of a lot of relatable topics some horrific some sad some where he's found himself. Addiction, abuse, and some very difficult times with the women in his life. It's unclear if he should of taken accountability for the actions of others, though admittedly he does. The story gives an insight but non committal version of how he wanted to be portrayed in parts as the solid strong man that didn't hit women, who didn't back down from a fight and a lot of his problems were because his ex's were abusive, and it made me wonder about who he really was from who he portrayed. he gives a very quick overview of his addiction problems not going into depth on this particular struggle other than getting away and travelling helped him find himself. He's clearly suffered a great deal of horrific situations at the hands of people who should of loved him. Chris hasn't had anything easy and he's kept going stayed strong and has been very forgiving and the better man in situations I'm not sure I could of been. What I've taken from this is life can be unfair horrible and dark , but it's always changing things can change for the better and despite what happens in your past you are in control of the now, it's up to you to build your own life and happiness. Looking at Chris's social media you really wouldn't realise all he's been through, also how much I bet you can find that either you know of someone who's been through or you yourself have experienced a difficult time in life and can relate to his story. And I hope people's takeaway from this book is life is a journey. There will always be hope please never give up and always seek help when needed, whether it's through self discovery, therapy or whatever you can. Be the person you want and need to be and happiness is not far. I also liked the fact he is a good dad from the sounds of it he never gave up fighting for his kids.

Having seen your positive posts on social media I was interested in your story and what had led you to this point. My goodness you have had to use grit and determination to forge your way through to a better life for yourself and your sons and I have every respect for how you have managed to do this against all the odds. I hope that you manage to write the sequel to this so that people can see just how you have come through, and I am sure that your journey would be a huge inspiration for others to turn their own lives around despite the odds they may face. All the best Chris. Thank you for being brave enough to share.

Wow, how to fight through and win at life!
