About this listen

The shocking murders carried out by an unknown serial killer in London's East End during the autumn of 1888, haunted the public imagination at the time and have continued to exert a baleful influence ever since. But what was it like to live through those terrifying weeks?

This audiobook looks at the crimes of Jack the Ripper through the eyes of Londoners, including the rumors that swept through the capital city, the alarms, the riots, the persecutions, the suspicions, and the sheer naked terror of the awful autumn when a killer stalked the streets.

Really good details in here, well structured and good narration.

Only critisim at the end at the book there is a summary of the most likley suspects we know about, but somehow is missed off William Bury. I know there are many suspects and the author cant mention all of them, but this is the only suspect we have worth serious consideration.

I really enjoyed this audiobook, and the narration was excellent. The pace is just right, and the narrator’s voice and expression suit the material perfectly.
I’ve read many books on this subject, and if you’re looking for a strict whodunnit or a purely factual, forensic breakdown of the case, this probably isn’t for you. The case is not “solved” in the way some Jack the Ripper books attempt to do — and I actually found that refreshing.
Instead, this works very well as an introduction. What I appreciated most was the focus on the people, the atmosphere, and what life was like in the area at the time. That broader social context really brings the period to life.
It’s not aimed at hardened Ripperologists, but for casual listeners or anyone interested in history and true crime, it’s a very good and engaging listen.

Enjoyable, atmospheric, and well paced

I loved this book , unusually putting Victorian society history and Jack the Ripper together. I can certainly recommend it as a great listen if you like history and murder !

If you want not only an analysis of the ripper crimes but also an overview of how the crimes were perceived, the prevailing attitudes of common people and police; the values that influenced them in this era then this is the book for you. Brilliantly presented information for anyone interested in Victorian policing - not just Jack the Ripper.

Wonderfully detailed

Compared to other books on the subject, this is relatively short but it’s a fantastic listen. It gives a broad perspective on life in Whitechapel, which would appear more caring and community based then I realised. I’d highly recommend this. A good, informative listen.
