About this listen

Earth’s best-kept secret lies hidden in the attic of a concealed and aged hero.

A portal to other worlds. A priceless treasure. A powerful weapon...

When two unsuspecting fifteen-year-olds stumble upon it by chance, they unwittingly alert the forces of evil on another world to its survival. A war-torn place devoid of peace and hope.

Now, the boys will be hunted. Now, they will have to fight for the right to survive. For now, our world and countless others are in peril and life will never be the same again.

Some relics are buried for good reason. Some secrets are too dangerous to share.

Great start to the series! The world-building is creative and the story hooked me immediately. Jake is an interesting lead and the mystery really delivers.
Unlike the sequel, the narration here is top-notch. The audio is clear and professional, making it a great listen. Highly recommended!

tl;dr I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will definitely read the next book to see what happens next!

Don't be put off by the Young Adult badge on this book. it is a young adult book and it definitely starts off feeling like it's a 'younger' young adult book, but it develops and matured as the story progresses and is well worth your time! The author spends time developing the characters and building on them through the book and as a result I found myself genuinely caring about them and wanting to see how they fared. At its heart, this is an adventure story with a good dose of self discovery and growing up. The bad guys are clearly unredeemably bad and the good guys are (mostly) heroically good. Towards the end of the book, a new character is introduced, who has the potential to be really interesting and nuanced, so I'm particularly looking forward to learning more about him in the future. I found the ending to this book particularly pleasing, it really drew me in and left me wanting to find out what happens next to the main characters and wondering how the next book will play out from the situation that the characters are left in. I never read series back to back, preferring time to mull the book over before heading to the next one, but I will definitely read the next one!

If you're looking for some good old fashioned fun and adventure, pick this book up.

A big adventure with heart
