About this listen

Whispered secrets about her parents’ past take on new urgency for Chariline as she pays one last visit to the land of her forefathers, the ancient kingdom of Cush.

Raised as an orphan by her aunt, Chariline has only been told a few pieces of her parents’ tragic love story. Her beautiful dark skin is proof that her father was Cushite, but she knows nothing else. While visiting her grandfather before his retirement as the Roman official in the queen’s court, Chariline overhears that her father is still alive, and discovering his identity becomes her obsession. Both her grandfather and the queen have reasons for keeping this secret, however, and forbid her quest. So when her only clues lead to Rome, Chariline sneaks on the ship of a merchant trusted by friends.

Theo is shocked to discover a stowaway on board his vessel and determines to be rid of her as soon as possible. But drawn in by Chariline’s story, he feels honor-bound to see her safely to shore, especially when it appears someone may be willing to kill for the truth she seeks.

In this transformative tale of historical fiction, best-selling author Tessa Afshar brings to life the kingdom of Cush and the Roman Empire, introducing listeners to a fascinating world filled with gripping adventure, touching romance, and a host of lovable characters - including some they may recognize from the biblical book of Acts.

i really enjoy biblical fiction and in that regard the story did not disappoint. The story is romantic and intriguing, always keeping you wondering. I just didn't enjoy the narration. I didn't like how Caroline is made to sound like a four-year-old and I sometimes felt as though she didn't prepare for the recording before hand.

Great story, narration not so much

I rarely write reviews; I just click the stars. In this case I make an exception. I purchased this audiobook in February 22 and returned it within a day as I disliked the narration. A week ago (May 23), I decided to try it again so repurchased it. It is such a great story and follows and completes 'The Thief of Corinth' and the 'The Daughter of Rome.' The problem with the narration, in my opinion, is that the various accents that the narrator has given to the characters do not fit the people. However, she has a nice voice when she is simply reading the story. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and recommend that you persevere, if you, like me, initially balk at the narration when the characters speak. You will be glad that you did. And I know that at a later time I will revisit the story and enjoy it all over again. You meet great Biblical characters, like the Ethiopian Eunuch that Philip meets and baptises, and the various characters from Tessa's previous books. This is Theo's story and the interesting lady who captures his heart. Enjoy.

Don't be put off. Great story and listenable.

I should have listened to the comments about the narration which was appalling. I had to push through many times when tempted to give up. I get that the narrator was trying to display variety for the different characters but the whiny baby like voice for Caroline was almost unbearable. Sometimes less is more.

Great story sadly let down by the narration

never wanted it to end. Tessa always tells stories of surrender with depth and skill

such a beautiful story of healing and grace.

I listened to another book by this author n it was really good, so I thought I'd try another 1 of her books.

The most distracting aspect of this audio book, were the different voices:

- male n female
- ethnicity in 1 section (I could be wrong)

Overall, this book is reasonable!

Timing!
