Summary

What if you saved a man's life only to find out later that he's a murderer? Twelve years ago, a female soldier pulled her comrade from a burning vehicle. Now, she's still left with both the physical and mental scars of her decision.

Aimee has always believed herself to be the jinx, blaming herself for the tragic events of what happened that day. Not everyone made it out of the explosion alive and in one piece.

Violent flashbacks torment her relentlessly and force her to hide who she truly is. Her trauma is even stopping her from progressing with her career and from ever taking the next step in another meaningful relationship.

When an old flame threatens to reignite in the form of Jones – the man she saved over a decade ago – she must face her troubled past again. But there's a problem ...

Jones is accused of murdering someone she once loved, and Aimee doesn't know who to trust – her heart or the evidence in front of her. With her friends by her side, Aimee sets out to discover whether Jones is indeed a killer or is being framed for a crime he didn't commit.

But it's not that simple, especially when simmering feelings start to burn hotter, and a member of her family is put in immediate danger.

Is Aimee the jinx in her own life, or is she finally going to break free from her hellish past and start living again?

Jinx is a gripping thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the final tick. If you enjoy fast-paced suspense with a hint of romance and a strong female protagonist, then you'll love this standalone by Jessica Huntley.

This is a gripping fast paced thriller told using a dual timeline narrative, and with multiple POVs throughout. It’s a romantic suspense murder mystery. Aimee’s time in the military in 2009/2010 is gritty and complex. A variety of serious issues are discussed and detailed. At the beginning of the book/audio there are trigger warnings. The current time period explores where Aimee is now and her discovery of what happened twelve years ago. Can Aimee unscramble her emotions and find her life’s path, whilst helping the police find the murderer(s)!?

Brilliant narration from Candace Fitzgerald, who brings the action and thrill to your ears.

Such a great plot. Saving a mans life and then twelve years later do find out he could be a murder. Aimee served in the British Army and is struggling with PTSD.
Determined to find out the truth, even if it means confronting her past and hopefully peace for her.
A thriller, twists and drama with romance.

3.5 ⭐ rounded to 4.

I don’t know how I feel after listening to this audiobook, because I don’t think it was really a thriller, at least not what I consider a thriller to be.
Even if I have to say it kept me interested throughout and I was eager to keep listening, I think it was more like a memoir/romance packaged into a mystery.

The main protagonist Aimee Price is an ex-soldier who 12 years prior, after a war accident, struggled to function personally and in society, left with deep physical and mental scars. The only positive thing about that accident is that she managed to save her colleague Jones, although he doesn’t see it that way.
Amidst all of this, straight after her recovery she started a relationship with her army doctor and 2 days before they were due to marry, broke up with him. Now 12 years later, her ex fiance has been murdered and her ex colleague (whom she saved) has reappeared. Are the two things connected?

The book has a dual timeline with events in the past informing events in the present, helping the reader connect some of the dots. The murder in this story though, is not really the main focus, but Aimee’s path toward recovery is. The deep dive into the life of a female soldier was really interesting and eye opening, as well as the difficulty of coming back into society after a life threatening war accident.

The themes dealt in this book are very serious and dark, like suicide, abortion, inability to have children and mental illness, but I truly believe the author did an amazing job portraying them in an empathic way.
So, although I don’t think this was a thriller, I did enjoy it and I’m willing to read more from Jessica Huntley. There are also several tropes that some people might like, like second chance and enemies to lovers.

Thanks to the author for the opportunity to listen to it and this is my honest opinion.

Interesting perspective into the aftermath of an army life

I really enjoyed this quick paced thriller. Based around Army experience, this page turner will definitely leave you wanting more.

I loved the storytelling which was enhanced by the narrator, although preferred her female characterisations.

Will definitely be reading more by Jessica Huntley.
