About this listen

What if your best friend’s child disappears? On your watch? What would you do? This is exactly what happens to Lisa Kallisto one freezing December in the English Lakes. Her whole world descends into the stuff of nightmares. Because, not only is 13-year-old Lucinda missing, and not only is it all Lisa’s fault, but she’s the second teenage girl to disappear within a fortnight. And the first one turned up stripped bare, after suffering from a terrifying ordeal.

Wracked with guilt over her mistake, and after being publicly blamed by Lucinda’s family, Lisa sets out to right the wrong. But as she begins peeling away the layers surrounding Lucinda’s disappearance, Lisa learns that all is not as it first appears to be.

I only finished 5 minutes ago. I am not sure I have listened to a book so quickly but it was irresistible. Paula Daly wrote from the heart - it was obvious that her characters were very "real" to her. Lisa - the mother belittled by the title of the book - was so honest and so human she could have been a friend and neighbour of anyone. Joanna the detective was also beautifully depicted - so much so that I hope there will be some sort of sequel with the detective and her sidekick with indigestion figuring prominently. The narrator, Laura Brattan, was fantastic. Her accents were spot on from cutglass to deep Cumbria. Please, Paula Daly, write another book soon!

So possible, so real, so human - brilliant!

If you could sum up Just What Kind of Mother Are You? in three words, what would they be?

Very good indeed. I hate to say this but I found the accent very annoying - not the narrator's fault but north east accents just grate on he. But I got used to it!

What other book might you compare Just What Kind of Mother Are You? to, and why?

Ooh. I think it's in a semi- genre of its own.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes. I was very upset and annoyed that after the book finished the author revealed what had inspired her. I didn't finish listening ( it was an author's note after the book had finished and is no spoiler) and was really upset. It in fact made me think in hindsight she had no respect or like of her main character. I also didn't see how it related to the book so was an unnecessary sharing of angst.

Fantastic debut!

What does Laura Brattan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Her different accents to the characters.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Do you really know your friends?

This kept me mesmerised. Trying to work out myself what happens . I kept changing my mind. So to me it wasn't obvious, so kept having to listen.

A superb story. Loved Lisa and her family and all the characters flooded to life through the authors words. Wonderfully written tale about every parents worse nightmare with unexpected twists and turns. Both moving and, at times very funny, I loved every chapter.

Brilliant!
