About this listen

Former Army Ranger turned government assassin Álvaro Montero and CIA Officer Caiden Cardosa crossed paths two years ago in Vienna, where their encounter ended less than amicably—despite the explosive sexual chemistry between them. Now Caiden is riding a desk at Langley after his cover is blown. And Álvaro—who was “killed”—has a new identity and purpose as Delta/D, an operative for the Locke and Keyes Agency, under the leadership of the mysterious Orion.

When D and Caiden team up in a deadly black ops mission, the urge to kill each other will have to take a back seat to the desire for revenge against the man who betrayed them both. Surviving the mission won’t be easy. Resisting the passion between them—that might be impossible.

Was looking forward to this as listened to a few Charlie Crochet books and had liked them, but this was a let down. This story was rushed and needed to be fleshed out some more, too much happening in short amount of time. Pity, as it had the makings of a good book. Not worth a repeat listen.

Rushed

A fun romp feauring a CIA agent relegated to a desk job and a former government assassin supposed dead but who is actualyl alive and well and working for the mysterious Locke and Keyes black ops agency. The two had met briefly and hooked up two years earlier - and Caiden was furious when he came back from the bathroom to find the other man had quietly disappeared. Following that, everything else went to shit when he was picked up by the police, his cover was blown and he was quickly returned to the US. Naturally, his reunion with 'D' - formerly known as Alvaro Montero - is not an amicable one, so there's plenty of enemies-to-lovers spark and snark as the two have to attempt to put the past behind them and work together on the mission they've been assigned, although of course, it's not long before they're burning up the sheets and coming to the conclusion - separately - that perhaps they've found something special in each other.

It's a rollicking yarn with plenty of action, humour and a decent plot, but the romance was pretty insta-lust to insta-love and I did roll my eyes pretty hard when D got down on one knee to propose to Caiden in the middle of the clean up after the final operation to take down the bad guys. I also found the use of "D" as a name was really distracting as I was reading, and although I know that getting the right balance of names and pronouns when writing same-sex characters can be a nightmare, the frequency of the use of both names here sometimes made me feel like I was going cross-eyed!

Greg Boudreaux is as excellent as ever; he has a fantastic range of character voices so that there's never any confusion as to which character is speaking, and he always hits the right emotional beats.

A fun palatte cleanser, although not as good as the Four Kings/Wild Cards books.

Insta-love action romp with fab narration

I love the four kings series, but this one is just as fun. I love the pace, story and well rounded characters. got lost in a movie in my mind as narrator is great at bringing it to life. hope the other books in series make it to audible as need to know what happens next.

snarky spy fun
