About this listen

Someone is trying to kill celebrated author Dylan St James. But who would want him dead? And why? And who the hell shoots someone with a harpoon, anyway? Disgruntled failed crime writer Freddie Winters spends his days conning old ladies, setting up fake book signings, sneaking into literary festivals uninvited and lamenting his lack of success.

When his old friend Dylan turns to him for help, Freddie agrees to use his limited detective skills to find out who’s behind the murder attempt. With a group of suspicious ex-wives, a jealous rival, a crazed stalker fan and an exploding postman to deal with, Freddie soon stumbles upon a catalogue of crazy behaviour and a truly bizarre motive for murder. But can he stop the killer?

I've got to honest I had no idea what to expect but this was brilliant - it absolutely gripped me from start to finish and the narrating was excellent. I'm going to look at more titles by both the author and narrator.

Brilliant - absolutely loved it

I've read a lot of comic thrillers and this one stands out for one particular reason: I can still recall the plot! Which means it was more than just funny and wittily written. It was memorable. I've also since discovered that Alastair Puddick was shortlisted for the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for Comic Fiction in 2020 for his novel '46% Better Than Dave'. But sadly that isn't available on Audible. 'The Unexpected Vacation of George Thring' is however. Unfortunately, Puddick's first name is incorrect on that listing - so search for the title instead. Enjoy Both. I did.

Kept me smiling and thinking from beginning to end

Really enjoyed this detective mystery. The main character is delightfully dreadful but has his redeeming characteristics. Amusing and enjoyable. The narrator is a bit of a virtuoso and well suited to the role and the story. Hoping for a further adventure.

Delightful
