About this listen

Ken Clarke needs no introduction. One of the genuine 'Big Beasts' of the political scene, during his forty-six years as the Member of Parliament for Rushcliffe in Nottinghamshire he has been at the very heart of government under three prime ministers. He is a political obsessive with a personal hinterland, as well known as a Tory Wet with Europhile views as for his love of cricket, Nottingham Forest Football Club and jazz.

In Kind of Blue, Clarke charts his remarkable progress from working-class scholarship boy in Nottinghamshire to high political office and the upper echelons of both his party and of government. But Clarke is not a straightforward Conservative politician. His position on the left of the party often led Margaret Thatcher to question his true blue credentials and his passionate commitment to the European project has led many fellow Conservatives to regard him with suspicion - and cost him the leadership on no less than three occasions.

Clarke has had a ringside seat in British politics for four decades and his trenchant observations and candid account of life both in and out of government will enthral readers of all political persuasions. Vivid, witty and forthright, and taking its title not only from his politics but from his beloved Miles Davis, Kind of Blue is political memoir at its very best.

Very much enjoyed listening to one of the great political actors of the past 40 years, someone with genuine experience and am very pleased Ken narrated his own book. The book itself had touching moments, while the heavy detail of policy was left out there were some dry segments but it was an all round positive account of his life and time in public office. On occasion felt left wanting more.

An intriguing listen

An amusing and nostalgic trip though the last 40 years or so of British Politics. Ken Clarke was always very likeable and this autobiography merely reinforces that. Well worth a listen and interesting to finally find out what the Duchy of Lancaster actually entails.

Very enjoyable and informative narrative. At my age – a good few years younger than Ken Clarke – it took me through all of the momentous political situations that I witnessed or missed during my adult life, culminating in the disaster that was Brexit and the lies and jiggery-pokery that produced the leave result.

A colourful political careeer, brilliantly told

This is a long book by a big politician. That normally means a great deal of self justification and political rewriting of history, except Clarke doesn't seem to want to do that. He amiably relates his story from Nottingham to Westminster via Cambridge and the law courts with charm, self awareness and a wry sense of humour. He analyses the times through which he lived as a clear eyed and reliable witness who was always close the action.

On Thatcher, Major and Cameron he is kind but honest. On opponents he is usually respectful and never shows any malice, he says it how he saw it and you can make your own mind up. His is unrelenting in his dislike of bureaucracy as a process, but not of bureaucrats as operatives and people. He wants to be seen as a doer in a world of meetings and policy reviews.

Early on I found myself disliking him more than I expected to, but after 31 minutes short of a full day in his company, I can say that I recommend this political biography far more readily and strongly than any of the others I have read or listened to. He has flaws, but is at ease with himself in a way that a only pragmatist with principles can be.

A good Political Memoir: Who Knew?

I don’t entirely agree with his politics but I do like Ken Clarke and have respect for this 3 stripe political general. However, this is a rare exception to my preference for hearing an author narrate their own book. I don’t think it was intentional and many may not hear it al all - but, to my ear at least, he sounds pompous and self aggrandizing. Became a bit of a distraction for me, but it’s a pretty comprehensive chronicle of the big themes in British politics over the last 40 years and , for the content at least, a very compelling listen. Enjoyed it very much.

Good old fashioned insight but....
