Summary

'A fantastic read, a rollicking, page-turning, edge-of-your-seat road-trip of a book' - John Gwynne, author of Shadow of the Gods

Clay Cooper and his band were once the best of the best - the meanest, dirtiest, most feared and admired crew of mercenaries this side of the Heartwyld.

But their glory days are long past; the mercs have grown apart and grown old, fat, drunk - or a combination of the three. Then a former bandmate turns up at Clay's door with a plea for help: his daughter Rose is trapped in a city besieged by an enemy horde one hundred thousand strong and hungry for blood. Rescuing Rose is the kind of impossible mission that only the very brave or the very stupid would sign up for.

It's time to get the band back together for one last tour across the Wyld.

'Every avid fantasy reader, pay attention and let me do you a favour. Make sure you read this book no matter what. As of now, I'm calling Kings of the Wyld one of the best fantasy debuts of all time' Petrik Leo, Novel Notions

Very funny in places, very charming all the way through - this is fantasy that rocks. A lovely cast of characters made interesting through the eyes of an amusing, wry narrator this is a road trip adventure fantasy that wears its influences on its sleeve.

Not exactly epic fantasy and not for those who are too purist in their tastes, but it has an epic feel about it and a lighthearted tone that I just very much enjoyed. Don't want to spoil too much, so I'll just say it was a pleasure to read the adventures of this band as they rambled on - this book has a whole lotta love from me.

Very well narrated too; though there's one dodgy edit just before the finale.

Rollicking fantasy adventure with a soundtrack to kill for.

Loved the first 5 hours, completely sucked me in, but felt it tailed off as the book went on. For me, I loved how it seemed to flip the fantasy genre on its head with its emphasis on older has-beens. The Leader who now carries rocks in his bag or mage who now sells quack erectile dysfunction cures was both hilarious and dark at the same time. I felt it tailed off though as it became clear that the author wasn't going to follow through on them being old has-beens or Clay's (very reasonable) predictions in Chapter 1 that this was a suicidal mission that would obviously get them killed/maimed. Becomes a miraculous tale as the 50 year olds manage to beat all the 20 year olds at their own game (without using their guise and old-age intellect, nope they're just still better at fighting despite the first half of the book establishing them as rusty, fat and creaky?) and all of their ailments get magically cured and the insurmountable hurdles (be it falling hundreds of meters or airships appearing out of nowhere just pre death[happens twice]) become magically vavooshed by luck, and luck and yet more luck. Every time when I think the story was going to confront the realism of 4 old men (+ one uber soldier) going on a suicide mission, it just cops out and everyone's magically saved. Started out dark and humorous, but by the end had just became a bit ridiculous as the main characters' plot armour miraculously saved them from death chapter after chapter after chapter.

Starts strong but tails off

Stumbled upon this as research, what I came away with was one of the most fantastical adventurous romps I have ever read, and a stearn warning from my manager for laughing to loud at my desk. Heart warmimg to breaking and back again. Sequel was an insta-buy!

Well I wasn't expecting that...
