En este poema alegórico Dante Alighieri muestra un proceso de perfección para alcanzar la felicidad humana y divina. La obra consta de tres partes: Infierno, Purgatorio y Paraíso. Para llegar a éste último es preciso seguir un camino que obliga a pasar por un rechazo del pecado (infierno) y purificación del arrepentimiento (purgatorio) que permitan llegar a la felicidad humana y religiosa (paraíso). Dante, acompañado por el poeta Virgilio - la razón - y, posteriormente, por Beatriz - la revelación - realiza este peregrinaje por los distintos círculos del infierno y purgatorio hasta llegar al último estado de felicidad.
