Summary

A brutal, infamous cult – and a filmmaker on its tail . . .

Last Days is a deeply unnerving found-footage horror from the award-winning author of The Ritual, Adam Nevill.

‘Fast becoming Britain’s answer to Stephen King’ – The Guardian

The Temple of the Last Days. A cult with a grotesquely violent history of murder, sex and occult dealings that destroyed itself during one night of ritualistic violence decades ago.

Strapped-for-cash indie filmmaker Kyle Freeman embarks on a project to unravel the cult’s bloody history. Little does he know, this voyage will plunge him into an abyss where dark reality melds with the inexplicable supernatural.

From London, through France, to Arizona, Freeman is haunted by uncanny events, out-of-body experiences and a disturbing presence. Then they discover the power of the cult’s terrible legacy, and that it may be too late for them to escape . . .

Critic reviews

Taking its cue from real-life cults Last Days is an effectively creepy novel that will leave you sleeping with the lights on
His previous novel was the superb The Ritual, but with Last Days he's gone one better. This is riveting, and Nevill is fast becoming Britain's answer to Stephen King
There are books that spark the imagination. Last Days lit a bonfire. Spooky, eerie delight. This one made me perk up at unfamiliar noises and to examine the shadows a little more closely. Nevill should be ranked up near masters like Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith. This is what a horror book should be
Horror fans will revel in this appropriately chilling tale of modern-day murder and mayhem that stretches back several centuries . . . This appropriately ghastly tale definitely lives up to its billing as a Blair Witch Project–style novel (Margaret Flanagan)
Obsession and megalomania, sex and power make for a sophisticated, literate and well-crafted paranormal horror
This exceptional macabre tale stuns in its ability to inspire abject, primal terror. Readers will lose all hope of peaceful, undisturbed sleep. Highly recommended
Fans of films about haunted places, otherworldly beings, and rituals gone terribly wrong will find this homage deliciously chilling
All I can say is, wow. What an amazing book. Last Days has just about everything I look for in a horror novel; it is well crafted, has a strong plot with believable characters and the horror sequences get under your skin and into your mind. And the images just won’t go away. You’ll find yourself replaying scenes in your mind for days
In Last Days, Adam Nevill has managed to create a fusion of the Charles Manson mystique, the occult and a found footage documentary that is both a magnificent and gripping read from the very first page
Overall the supernatural elements are convincing and you are drawn into the story to the extent that you’re biting your nails on one hand whilst turning the pages with the other. The horror, whilst terrifying, is not overly grotesque and is just about on the right side of dark to be universally popular. So what we are left with is another strong offering from Nevill which will leave you reading nervously into the small hours of the night
This is not a novel for the faint-of-heart or those averse to disturbing subject matter. It does, however, reward avid horror fans with an engrossing mystery and memorable scares
Not everyone enjoys horror stories, but for those that do read Last Days and afterwards look for more of the same from Adam Nevill who surely has the knack of creating undertones of chilling terror in an engrossing book

scary and gripping at odds with the relaxing narration which is also excellent, how has this never been made into a movie?

excellent

Good story that seemed to go very quickly with a good ending, but the narration was a bit quiet and whispery at times listening in the car…

I found the writing on this a bit annoying, the author uses the passive voice a lot - drinks were drunk, cigarettes were lit - which gets a bit irritating, and they were very much the sort to not call a one handled manual digging tool a spade, you get the feeling he has a thesaurus next to his lap top. The story didn’t hold any shocks, suspense or particular horror for me, I guessed what would happen and it did, and I didn’t find the monsters that scary, they felt like one of the afore mentioned digging implements to the head would have finished them off nicely. The narrator had that kind of voice that is all a bit hammer horror, which didn’t help much, I probably would have returned it but audible said no, but for me it was one of those you have more as background than really focus on.

All a bit over blown

I absolutely loved this book. The narrator does a fantastic job. The story is brilliant. It’s a masterpiece. I was very unsure on Adam Nevill after reading one of his previous books but this was great.
