Summary

Last Summer of the Drive-In Movies is a baby boomer coming-of-age/love story/fictionalized memoir about two teenage boys who worked at one of the last drive-in movie theaters in Corpus Christi, Texas, during the summer of 1973 and their first serious romances. Author Bob Gunner has captures the essence of that special summer between junior high and high school, when movies, music, and maturing provided them with life lessons and paved their way to coming adulthood.

This story feels so real I had to check to see if it wasn't a memoir, the writing feels totally authentic and really captures the feel of the time, If you want to get a feel of teenage life in small-town America before Netflix, mobile phones and endless TV, this gives you that authentic vibe. Loved it!

I really enjoyed listening to Bucky's teenage years in the heart of Texas. He moved to texas after his parent's divorce with his family only to treated horribly by his step dad. He finds solace with his best friend Pug when they start a part-time job at the local theatre. They go through love and heart ache as they meet their first loves in their lives. This is the summer they grow up and discover who they are.

Now this was a bit of a trio down memory lane for me.

For starters I loves the narrations voice and fluency, such an easy listen.

Navigating romances at a movie theatre just brought back so many memories for me.

A nostalgic summer of roller skating, drive-ins, friendship, and young love. This novel takes place in simpler times without mobile technology, where what played on the radio and catching up with friends or your crush on the landline payphone down the road was the teenage obsession by day and hanging out at the drive-in at night. Although so different to our modern times, the challenges of navigating family dynamics, awkward coming of age in friendship and blossoming love are universally similar. A recommended relaxing and entertaining listen.
